With A-Level results day happening this week, experts in the AI and technology industry are advising students to consider a career in the rapidly growing industry.
IT service provider, Redcentric, launched its apprenticeship scheme in December 2022. It is open to anyone from the age of 18, from college leavers to those looking to upskill or change careers and works closely in partnership with Leeds City College.
Kieran Brady, Group Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “The technology industry is growing six times faster than any other sector, so the career pathway which this scheme offers to apprentices, in terms of on-the-job training and learning, is very exciting.
“Experience and skills in this industry are always in demand. Working in the technology industry opens up so many opportunities for career progression. You can expect great job security and a higher than average salary. Ultimately, the thing that will enable you to succeed in this industry is having the drive and ambition to constantly learn and develop your skills and an apprenticeship is a great way to do this.”
Case study: Caitlin Beevers, New Business Sales Executive
Caitlin Beevers, New Business Sales Executive, joined the Redcentric apprenticeship scheme in June 2023 after her previous job working in an administrative role didn’t provide the flexibility she needed to work around her commitments as a rugby player for Leeds Rhinos and England Women.
Caitlin explains why she’s pleased to have embarked on an apprenticeship in the IT and technology industry: “I had never really considered a career in the digital industry as I didn’t think it would be the right fit for me and I didn’t get the best GCSE results at school. But I’ve learned so much since starting my role, it has really broadened my knowledge. The technology industry is continuously growing and there are so many opportunities for people who choose this career path.
“I think, in general, apprenticeships are changing and this isn’t your typical scheme. Whereas at school you were graded on your academic performance, in this type of role it’s all about having the determination and drive to grow and succeed and, in turn, skills and knowledge are developed.
“When I first started, I was in a sales role as part of the lead generation team. I’ve since moved to the Premier Account Management team where I manage some of the smaller enterprise accounts to ensure each client gets the support they need and a high level of service. We also have regular lunch and learn sessions where we develop our technical knowledge. This has been extremely useful, especially for those looking to pursue a more technical role in the future.”
When asked about the skills young people can learn as part of an apprenticeship scheme in the technology industry, Caitlin said: “Definitely confidence because no matter how much or little you know about the industry, you’ll quickly start to pick things up. You’ll also develop your communication skills as you’ll likely be dealing with customers or clients on a regular basis. Listening to how others communicate on calls and in meetings has really helped me to learn and develop in my role.
“The best thing about the scheme is that you can choose your own career path as there’s such a wide range of opportunities for you to learn new skills whilst you’re working.”
Discussing her rugby commitments, Caitlin says: “Finding a job that is flexible enough to support me being a part of the team has been difficult as my training schedule means that I often need to be off for long periods of time, to train, travel and attend media conferences and events. The apprenticeship scheme at Redcentric encourages young people to prioritise and pursue their outside commitments and the team have been so supportive of my rugby career; taking time out has never been an issue.”
Finally, Caitlin shared her one piece of advice to young people looking to develop a career in the technology industry: “Be open minded and consider all of your options. You may start with a plan in mind and then learn something new and decide that you want to take a different path, which is absolutely fine. Having drive and ambition is the most important thing.”
The apprenticeship scheme at Redcentric is in partnership with Leeds City College, where students will receive off-the-job training on a relevant course, working towards a recognised qualification. The scheme spans over 18 months and will provide future talent a combination of technical and sales related knowledge and skills, as well as a Level 3 IT Technical Salesperson Apprenticeship qualification.
