We are proud to announce that our partner, IWTM UK, has won the Environmental Contribution Award at the prestigious CSA Awards for their groundbreaking work at Redcentric’s London West data centre.
The award recognises an innovative approach to cleaning the water in our Chilled Water (CW) System, setting a new benchmark for sustainability and operational efficiency in critical infrastructure management.
The challenge: Choosing the right solution
Faced with the need to clean our Chilled Water System, we were presented with three possible options:
- Water replacement – This would have required removing and transporting hundreds of thousands of litres of contaminated water to specialised facilities for treatment, a costly and environmentally impactful process.
- Aggressive chemical treatment – This approach would have involved using harsh chemicals, which posed risks to both the environment and the long-term health of our system.
- Electrochemistry-based technology – A cutting-edge solution using electrochemistry to clean the water without chemicals.
After careful consideration, Redcentric opted for the electrochemistry-based solution – an innovative and exciting choice, as it had never been implemented at this scale. However, with support from IWTM UK and our principal contractor CBRE, we were confident that this forward-thinking solution aligned with our commitment to sustainability.
The results: A greener future
The results have been transformative. Not only has the water been restored to a condition that meets environmental discharge standards, but the system now operates without any chemical intervention. This technology provides continuous water conditioning, which has also cleaned the pipework and associated chilling equipment.
The benefits include:
- Environmental sustainability: The treated water could be discharged safely if ever needed.
- Operational efficiency: Improved chilling performance and enhanced lifespan of our equipment.
- Chemical-free solution: Ongoing maintenance without the use of harmful substances.
This project demonstrates the power of innovative thinking and collaboration. Together with IWTM UK and CBRE, we have taken a significant step towards a greener, more sustainable future.
A collaborative success
This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration and trust of our partners. The use of electrochemistry at such a large scale is a milestone for both Redcentric and the industry, proving that sustainable solutions can also deliver improved performance and longevity.
As we celebrate this success, we remain committed to exploring innovative approaches that contribute to a more sustainable future for our data centres and beyond.
